Inside Winemart, Riverhead.
have also worked in the store. Now they are both away at school. Of course Charles’ wife Luciana supports the enterprise. Heading into fall, the Maneris are planning a number of in-store wine tastings. ‘Can’t wait! I asked Chuck what I should buy if I were preparing for a blizzard. He said, “Bottle of wine and a bottle of whiskey?” That is some fine, balanced advice. The thing about Winemart in Riverhead, though, is they deliver anywhere on the East End! I asked Chuck, “Even to…Montauk?!” He said, “Sure, I love to fish.” Well, all right. Free delivery requires only a $100 order. No wonder they’ve been named one of Dan’s Papers “Best of the Best.”
By Stacy Dermont I like Riverhead. I go there periodically to stock up on all kinds of necessities. Walmart is a regular stop. Winemart Discount Wines & Liquors, in the very same plaza on Route 58, is a new addition to my routine. The promise of one of the largest selections of East End wines and their discounted prices on wine and liquor from around the world drew me in – but the stuffed wild turkey at the door and the fact that they have shopping carts inside have made me a new, regular customer. Shopping carts make my stocking up so civilized. Plus owners Charles J. and Chuck Maneri refused to tell me about any of their “colorful regulars.” I appreciate wine storeowners who keep their secrets. It’s no secret that the Maneris are Yankee fans. I asked them if Red Sox fans were allowed into the store, Charles said good-naturedly, “Sure, we love it when they come in. We bust their chops.” Charles opened his first wine store 31 years ago in Bohemia. His father was in the wholesale business and Charles helped him out, so his owning a store came naturally. His son Chuck is also well-versed in the business. Chuck favors bourbon and vodka and he likes to be the at-home mix master. He visits the local wineries as often as he can. He was excited about the event he’d recently attended—a special barrel tasting at Raphael in Peconic. He said it was, over-all “delicious.” Charles and Chuck have been selling a lot of Moscato and Prosecco this summer, while Wolffer rose and Pindar Chardonnay remain very popular. Chuck said they’ve also had a run on New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs. I asked for wine suggestions for a barbeque. Chuck suggested the Layer Cake Malbec, Bedell’s First Crush Red and Casalini’s Pinot Grigio. I love having so many choices at hand.
