Abstract This paper provides a critical review of the main theoretical contributions and of some applications dealing with fuzzy set theory in social research, focusing on the problems of determination of membership values in fuzzy sets – both when using membership functions and direct attribution of membership degrees to observed cases. Some reflections are also presented about future developments of fuzzy methods in social research.
